California Battling 367 Fires, Heat Wave and Red Flag Alerts across the West

California is battling 367 known fires, Governor Newsom said on Wednesday, with red flag alerts in 6 states amid a relentless heat wave in the West, while a flash flooding threat in the South; plus, more weather news and forecasts.

California declares state of emergency under 367 fires

On Wednesday, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency, telling reporters the state was currently battling 367 known fires, The Guardian reported. The governor also warned of “imminent” rolling power outages.

The fire situation has been exacerbated by the historic West Coast heat wave and sustained high winds, Deadline reported. Newsom said the state had been struck by lightning 10,849 times over the course of 72 hours. In Northern California alone, an estimated 46,225 acres were burning.

The governor also mobilized the National Guard to assist local agencies with the multiple ongoing emergencies.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a number of heat alerts for the Western portion of the US today.

Excessive heat warnings: central, southern, southwestern, southeastern and desert areas of California; western and southern Nevada; northwestern, western and central Arizona.

Heat advisories: southwestern and Los Angeles area of California; southern Nevada; central Arizona; northeastern North Dakota; northwestern Minnesota.

Critical fire weather warnings in 6 states

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued red flag warnings in 6 states in the West for Thursday.

Red flag warnings: North-central California; Western Nevada; northern, central, southern and eastern Utah; the western half of Colorado; southeastern Idaho; north-central, central and southwestern Montana.

Flooding threat for 5 states in the South

Lingering thunderstorms dumping heavy rain over parts of the South on Thursday will bring the threat of flash flooding.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for the following areas: central and east central Alabama; western and northern Georgia; western South Carolina; southeastern Tennessee; southwestern North Carolina.
