Extreme Heat in the Northeast and Southwest, Flood Threat in Central US

Extreme heat to parts of the West, Southwest, and the Northeast today, while scattered thunderstorms across the nation will bring the threat of flooding to parts of the Rockies, central US, Texas, and the South.

Hot with widespread thunderstorms across the nation is the big picture weather view today.

Northeast: Some of the hottest temperatures of the year, especially along the East Coast, amid thunderstorms.

Mid-Atlantic: Scattered storms.

Southeast: Hot and humid.

South & Mid-South: Scattered storms with the threat of flash flooding.

Ohio Valley: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy and warm.

Central US: Strong thunderstorms, heavy rain with the potential of flash flooding.

Northwest & Northern Rockies: A heat wave and scattered storms over portions of the lower Rockies, potential flooding over portions of Montana and Wyoming.

West: Scattered storms over Colorado and northern New Mexico, the coastal areas will be partly cloudy, with extreme heat in southern areas.

Southwest: Extreme heat with excessive heat warnings in many areas.

Flood warnings and watches

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of heavy rain that could bring potential flash flooding over portions of south-central Montana and northern Wyoming to the west, while in the central US, a large area of potential flooding over central and eastern Oklahoma, into northeastern Texas north of Dallas.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings, flood watches and flash flood watches for the following areas.

Flood warning: central Oklahoma; southeastern Kansas; northern and northeastern South Dakota; southern Texas.

Flood and Flash flood watch: Southern Texas; southeastern Louisiana; coastal areas of southern Mississippi; central and eastern Oklahoma; northwestern Arkansas; western South Dakota; northeastern Wyoming.
