Flood Risk from Central US to Southeast, Scorching in the West


Thunderstorms will span half the nation where heavy rain will bring the risk of flash flooding from the central US to the southeast on Thursday, while a number of heat alerts are in effect in the West amid scorching temperatures.

Flood risk from the central US to the southeast

Thunderstorms will span from the nation’s midsection to the East Coast on Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning of heavy rain with potential flash flooding over at least 13 states including:

Southern Nebraska; Kansas; northern and north central Oklahoma; Missouri; north-central and northeastern Arkansas; the southern half of Illinois; southern Indiana; southern Ohio; southern West Virginia; western Virginia; western North Carolina; Tennessee and Kentucky.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued a flash flood watch for eastern and south-central Nebraska; southwestern Iowa; Northeastern Kansas; southwestern, southeastern  and eastern Missouri; West Central and Southern Illinois; Southern Indiana; Western Kentucky, as well as a flood advisory for Paducah and Mayfield;

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heat alerts for the following locations:

Excessive heat warning: Eastern and southeastern Washington; northern and southwestern Idaho; Northeast Oregon; southeastern California, as well as desert areas; southern Nevada; Northwestern, Northern, central and southeastern Arizona.

Heat advisory: Northern and northeastern Nevada; Northeast Oregon; Northwest, Eastern and Southeast Washington; northern, central and southeastern Idaho; Western Montana.
