Spotty Snow in Northwest and East, Severe Thunderstorms in the South

Much of the US will enjoy a mostly dry day, but thunderstorms in the South will bring the potential for severe weather over Texas, with a wintry mix over the Midwest and spotty snow in parts of the Northwest and East.

Snow for the Northwest, spotty snowfall in the East

Spotty snow showers will affect parts of the Northwest and East on Wednesday.

In the Northwest, some winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories and avalanche warnings (*see below). Snow is forecast over north-central Washington, portions of western and eastern Oregon, central and southern Idaho, western Montana, and northwestern Wyoming. There is an avalanche warning for central, southwestern, and southeastern Idaho.

In the West, there is an avalanche warning for north-central Utah.

In the East, a few isolated spots of snowfall are forecast over parts of Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Freezing rain possible over Central US

Mixed precipitation is forecast over the mid-central US into the upper Midwest for Wednesday to affect parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

The possibility of freezing rain is forecast over west-central and southwestern Minnesota into northeastern South Dakota.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the following weather alerts for Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

Avalanche warning: central, southwestern and southeastern Idaho; north-central Utah.

Winter storm warning: northwest and southwest Washington; northwestern Arkansas; eastern Oklahoma.

Winter weather advisory: eastern Washington; northern Idaho; northwest California coast; northern, southeastern and northeastern South Dakota; southwestern Minnesota; northwestern and southwestern Iowa; eastern Nebraska; southwestern Missouri; northwestern Arkansas; eastern Oklahoma.

Thunderstorms in the South and Southern Midwest, severe over Texas

A large swath of the South and southern Midwest will see thunderstorms today that could turn severe over eastern Texas. Thunderstorms will also pass over parts of southern Kansas, central and eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and western Alabama.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for warning possible severe thunderstorms over eastern Texas around Houston and the surrounding areas, as well as along the coast and inland.
